What are these training sessions? New Leader Essentials (NLE): An introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding and methods of Scouting. It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. Videos, discussions, and hands-on reinforcement are presented during the 90-minute training session. Ideally, all unit-based volunteers take this session at the same time, so they understand that they are all striving for the same results with the youth they serve. Each Leader completes NLE training only once, but can always come back and attend again. Cub Scout Leader Specific Training: Tiger Cub den leaders, Cub Scout Den Leaders, Webelos den leaders, Cubmasters and pack committee members can complete this training in about 3 hours. The leader is considered trained upon completion of NLE and the Leader Specific Training for that position Boy Scout Leader Specific Training: For Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, this training is divided into 4 parts. The first 3 parts concentrate on troop operations and can be completed in 1 full day or 3 evenings. The 4th part, which focuses on outdoor skills, lasts approximately a day and a half, depending on the skill level of the new leader. The leader is considered trained upon completion of NLE, Scoutmaster & Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. Committee Leader Training: Complete NLE, Fast Start, Youth Protection Training and 2 years of tenure in a position on the committee for this qualification. Outdoor Leader Skills Training: Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills will provide leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start a program right. It is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters and Varsity Scout coaches. The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook. The course is also ideal for Venturing leaders because it focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences. The course is a day and a half long, but a leader can move at an accelerated pace by demonstrating mastery of a specific skill. The emphasis is on the skill, rather than on attending the course. BALOO Training: An expanded version of the Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation, this training is designed to give Cub Scout Leaders the tools to successfully lead pack campouts. Learn planning techniques, fun and creative outdoor activities, equipment selection, quick and easy cooking, nature fun, safety procedures, BSA policies regarding pack camping, and much more. Youth Protection Training: For ALL new and current volunteers, leaders and parents. This training is an important component of the Boy Scouts of America’s strategy to protect its members from child abuse. This training is required for all registered members and the certification should be updated every couple years. Can be taken ON LINE through the Council’s website - www.toledobsa.com -- and go to the On Line Training options in the left column. Chartered Organization Representative Training (COR Training): Understand the important role you play in the organization of Boy Scouts of America as a representative of the chartered organization to the district committee and the local council. POW-WOW: ESC POW WOW is an exciting day long carnival of action activities and program ideas for all Cub Scout Leaders. This is a great training to refresh or learn new things for your Packs or Dens. Junior Leader Training: This program introduces your Troop’s new junior leaders to leadership skills. It generally follows the outline of the Scoutmaster’s Junior Leader Training Kit. The Workshop covers Troop and Patrol Organization, Leadership Styles and Principles, Cooperation, Building Spirit, Problem Solving, and Introduction to Leadership Positions, and is taught through the use of games and skits. YOU (the Troop) can do this yourself and do not need to wait for the District (any District) or Council to sponsor a training weekend or week. Specifically it is covered in the following (yes, this has been challenged in the past): Leadership Training Committee Guide: Plans, Procedures, Materials, #34169, 2005 Printing, p.17, Youth Leader Training " Various Programs are available to train the youth leaders of a Boy Scout troop. These are outlined in chapter 7 of the Scoutmaster Handbook, "Training Junior Leaders"; and in the Scoutmaster's Junior Leader Training Kit, No. 34306. 1. Introduction to Leadership. This personal coaching session is conducted by the Scoutmaster with newly selected troop junior leaders. It is outlined in the Scoutmasters Handbook and in the Scoutmaster's Junior Leader Training Kit. 2. Troop Junior Leader Training. This one-day workshop is conducted by the Scoutmaster for his junior leaders. It also uses the Scoutmaster's Junior Leader Training Kit, No. 34306. Upon completing this training, the Trained Leader emblem may be worn below the junior leader's badge of office. |
